Every year, people of Pasadena, California welcome the New Year with the Rose Parade – a part of “America’s New Year Celebration” which includes flower-covered floats, marching bands, and equestrian units.
The Parade is know for its flower-cover floats which are mostly built by professional float building companies and take nearly a year to construct.
You might be amazed when i tell you that, it is a rule of the parade that all surfaces of the float framework must be covered in natural materials (such as flowers, plants, seaweeds, seeds, bark, vegetables, or nuts, for example). That’s not all, the rule further states that no artificial flowers or plant material are allowed, nor can the materials be artificially colored.
The floats compete for one of 24 awards selected by three judges each year.
I am sure you might be wondering about cost of a Rose Parade Float….
Cost of a Rose Parade Float ?
Each float costs between $50,000 and $200,000 or more and takes up to a year to create. The floats are built in large warehouses, using a wide variety of materials and construction techniques.
Some of the professional float making companies include –
- Fiesta Parade Floats
- Phoenix Decorating Company
- Paradiso Parade Floats
However there are some communities and organizational sponsors, such as the City of Burbank, the City of Downey, City of South Pasadena, the City of Sierra Madre, the City of La Cañada Flintridge and the Cal Poly Universities who built their float on their own and hence their floats are referred to as “self-built floats”. They design, construct and decorate their floats solely on volunteer hours.
